A nursing bra is similar to a maternity bra in many ways. The only real difference is that a nursing bra will have special clasps on the cup so that it can be easily removed for quick access to the nipple for breastfeeding. If you don’t plan on breastfeeding, you won’t need a nursing bra. But if you are going to breastfeed, a nursing bra will become an essential part of your wardrobe. When to buy nursing bras during pregnancy differs from woman to woman, with some waiting until the very end before investing while others like to have a supply of them sooner.
As they are so similar to maternity bras, some women who plan to breastfeed buy them and wear them during their pregnancy. This is absolutely fine, just be prepared to buy some more if the ones you bought during your pregnancy no longer fit after you’ve started breastfeeding. As your milk comes in, your breasts may go up a few cup sizes.
How Many Nursing Bras Will I Need?
There is no right or wrong answer to this, but having at least two will mean you will always have one available while one is being washed. However, having several nursing bras will probably make your life much easier. Think about your underwear drawer now – you likely have at least 4 or 5 bras, if not more. Having several nursing bras in varying colors and patterns will help make you feel a little more like you, rather than just ‘mom’. Not to mention how handy it is having different colors to go under different shirts.
